For two years, the crew of Babylon Rocker wandered the Fringe, hoping to find peace and an escape from chaos. But when they save a runaway AI from a fanatical cyber cult, they find that their dark past is not so easily forgotten.
A genetically enhanced clone of the hated Emperor of the Sol Hegemon, Honoris would have died in his birth tank but for the compassionate intervention of Nasseena. For this alone, he followed her to the Fringe after the Revolution disowned her. Far from the center of galactic strife, there's less chance that he will be lynched for his genetic heritage. Still, he feels the vile legacy of his progenitor profoundly and is determined to be nothing like the emperor. Unfortunately, his naive determination to do good often drags him and the others into trouble.
De facto captain of Babylon Rocker, Nasseena spent her life fighting to overthrow the Sol Hegemon and its corrupt and ailing emperor. For a brief, shining moment, victory belonged to the Revolution. Then everything fell apart. The imperialists made a comeback and Nasseena could only watch as her leaders fell to corruption and infighting. Denounced as a traitor by her colleagues, she has come to the Fringe to escape from her past and start over.
Once, Aedran had served the emperor of the Sol Hegemon as a pacifier, a human genetically modified to produce chemicals that could manipulate human behavior. Many a nascent rebellion was quelled by an undercover pacifier simply walking into a crowd on the verge of rioting and letting his pheromones do the rest. However, Aedran resented being reduced to a living tool of tyranny and joined the revolution. Witty and cynical, he is more concerned with the present than the mistakes of the past and wants nothing more than to pilot the Babylon Rocker and make a semi-honest living.
Catherine never needed many excuses to be a revolutionary. Crippled in an industrial accident and, rather than healed, forcibly augmented with a bionic arm at the whim of her homeworld's overlords, she holds a special disdain for the aristocrats that rule so many human worlds. Both medic and engineer, all that matters to her is keeping the ship flying and her crewmate's skins intact.
Centuries ago, a radical team of eco-scientists genetically modified apes in the belief that humans would only care about the environment if some animals could speak for themselves. Julius Khwon, like so many of his kind, has struggled with the results of that long-ago experiment, striving to balance his animal instincts and the human intellect grafted into his mind. A friend of Nasseena since the revolution, he has followed her into exile, believing that far from the chaos of the core systems he will be able to find peace.
A man of God, and science, Cogitus was a mere bystander when the Revolution briefly overthrew the Sol Hegemon. However, a chance meeting has since tied his fate to the Babylon Rocker's crew and especially to Honoris, whom he has come to view as a student in need of guidance. Though his faith clashes with the rest of the crew, Cogitus is serene in his conviction that he serves the cause of knowledge and thus the Almighty.
